Back Pain

lower-back-painBack pain is a very common condition, it is estimated that about 80% of all population will have back pain at least once in life.

It usually feels like an ache, tension or stiffness in the back. Most cases of back pain are not caused by serious damage or disease, but rather by sprains, minor strains, minor injuries or a pinched or irritated nerve. If not managed properly though, about half of all people who get back pain will have further episodes. The first step to managing back pain is to rule out the possibility of any serious medical problem, such as infection, fracture or tumour (although these are rarely the cause).

Back problems can have many causes such as:

  • issues with posture and injuries
  • diseases such as osteoarthritis
  • disc disease
  • osteoporosis
  • some genetic conditions
  • Post back surgery/ Failed back surgery syndrome

Factors that increase the chance of developing back problems:

  • aging
  • lack of physical fitness
  • smoking
  • being overweight
  • occupation related risks

Back pain can be of sudden onset from everyday activities at home or at work, or it can develop gradually over time as a result of sitting, standing or lifting badly.
